Malmaison Hotel Oxford

The Cuckoo's Calling

Malmaison Hotel Oxford, a former prison converted into a hotel, becomes a key point in Robin Ellacott’s inquiry into Tony Landry’s whereabouts. By posing as Alison, Robin obtains a stay record that places Tony at the hotel from the evening of the sixth until the morning of the eighth, while also learning that Alison came to see him and left without meeting him. The hotel’s institutional past and its confidential guest records turn an Oxford stop into a test of competing accounts.

Setting and Identity

Robin tells Cormoran Strike that the hotel has been made out of an old prison, a detail that gives the place an unusual identity: a former institution of confinement repurposed for hospitality. She has travelled by train from London to Oxford to investigate it, following Strike’s interest in both the hotel and Professor Agyeman. The visit is not a general search of the building; Robin is trying to establish whether Tony Landry left something there or had been present as claimed.

Robin’s Inquiry

Robin approaches the hotel under an assumed identity, pretending to be Alison. She says she suspects Tony of having an affair and casts doubt on whether he had really been at the hotel. When staff resist disclosing information under their policy, she makes a scene and pretends to cry. Her performance persuades the employee who had spoken with Alison to take her aside and reveal the relevant dates. The episode shows Robin combining preparation, observation, and improvisation rather than relying on formal access.

The Record and Its Implications

The employee reports that Tony checked in on the evening of the sixth and checked out on the morning of the eighth. A complaint about being given the wrong newspaper at checkout made him memorable to staff, who also described him accurately enough for Robin to confirm his identity against his photograph on the Landry, May, Patterson website. The detail supplies a specific, independently recalled circumstance supporting the hotel’s identification of Tony, not merely a date supplied by an unverified source.

The hotel also confirms that Alison arrived and asked to see Tony, but he was not there at that moment; staff told her that he was staying with them, and she then left. The information distinguishes Tony’s overall stay from Alison’s unsuccessful attempt to meet him. Robin reports the result to Strike, who calls it suspicious. The hotel therefore contributes both a time-bounded account of Tony’s presence and a small discrepancy for the investigation to weigh, without itself resolving what happened around Lula Landry’s death.
